FAQ

Common Questions

What is solar panel?

Solar panels are devices that can convert sunlight energy into electrical energy. Photovoltaic (PV) technology is used to convert solar radiation into electrical energy.

Do solar panels produce greenhouse gas emissions?

Solar panels are an environmentally friendly source of energy because they do not emit harmful greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide or sulfur dioxide. Therefore, it can be said that the use of solar panels can reduce the impact of climate change.

Can solar panels continue to work and generate electricity on cloudy or rainy days?

The reaction that occurs in solar panels to produce electric current is caused by solar photon cells contained in sunlight, not from the sun's heat. So even in cloudy, overcast, and rainy conditions, solar panels still work to convert electrical energy, but the electrical energy produced is not as optimal as in sunny weather.

In On Grid and Hybrid solar energy systems whose systems are made connected to other power grids, when the solar panel's electricity supply is reduced due to cloudy or rainy conditions, the electricity supply will be fulfilled from other power grids such as national grid or generators.

Whereas in Off Grid solar energy systems, the electricity supply will be fulfilled by the electrical energy stored in the battery when the electrical energy produced by solar panels is not maximized due to cloudy or rainy days.

Can I install solar panels without batteries?

The installation of solar panels can be done in the absence of batteries by using On Grid solar energy systems (in conjunction with national grid or the Regional Electricity Network) or Hybrid (in conjunction with electricity sources other than national grid/Regional Electricity Networks such as generators).

On Grid solar energy system installation tends to have a number of benefits such as:

- More cost-friendly equipment investment

- Can export-import electricity to the national grid/Region Electricity Network to save monthly electricity bills

Do solar panels require regular maintenance?

Solar panels generally require maintenance to keep them functioning optimally.

Basically, what must be ensured is the cleanliness of the solar panel surface so that it can absorb sunlight radiation optimally. Solar panels should be cleaned regularly to ensure that dust, leaves, and other debris do not block sunlight.

Generally, it is recommended to clean solar panels between two and four times a year. To clean the solar panels, you only need a water spray and a soft cloth such as a mop or chamois to avoid scratching the surface of the solar panels.

In the rainy season, you may need to dry the panels with a cloth after the rain is over. Please do not use detergent or hot water when cleaning the solar panels as the extreme temperature difference between may crack the tempered glass of the solar panels.

SUN Energy also provides more comprehensive care and maintenance for solar energy systems to ensure maximum performance.

Can my solar panel only act as a backup if the national grid power goes out?

In On Grid type of solar energy systems, solar panels cannot be used as backup electricity. Solar panels are used in conjunction with national grid and will also go out if the national grid power goes out.

How do I get solar panels installed from SUN Energy?

To be able to install solar panels, you can first provide some data in the form of national grid electricity bills (Load Profile) for the last 6-12 months and the location of the building/land to be installed solar panels. We will use this data to calculate the amount of solar panel electricity capacity that can be installed and the electricity capacity that will be generated.

Furthermore, SUN Energy team will design the electrical installation design and assist with the licensing required for the installation of solar panels in your building.

Will our company need certain permits if we want to install solar panels?

Solar energy systems with a capacity exceeding 500 kVA are required to obtain an Operating License from national grid to ensure its feasibility and safety. This license arrangement will be carried out by SUN Energy, as this is one of the stages in our integrated services.

Can I install solar panels even though my building is not connected to national grid/regional electricity network?

You can still install solar panels as an alternative source of electricity because SUN Energy can accommodate off-grid and hybrid solar energy system projects. Some examples of SUN Energy projects that are not connected to national grid are KAT Birang (off-grid solar energy system with a capacity of 12 kWp) and PT SMART Tbk (hybrid solar energy system with a capacity of 63 kWp).

What is Net Metering?

Net metering is a system intended for national grid consumers who also use solar energy systems to send electricity generated by the system to the national grid network. This system allows electricity generated by solar energy system owned by national grid customers to be sent to the national grid electricity network if the electrical energy output by solar energy system exceeds usage.

The excess electrical energy will be stored for a while, so that later it can be used when it is needed, at night or when the power generated by the system is insufficient. Net metering is also often referred to as an electricity import-export scheme.

What is national grid's import-export scheme?

Electricity exports occur when customers who own solar energy systems do not use all the electrical energy produced by solar panels, so there is excess electrical capacity sent to the national grid. This electricity export will eventually make monthly electricity bill experience savings due to the use of national grid's reduced electricity capacity.

Conversely, the import of electricity to national grid occurs if the production of electrical energy by the solar energy system is inadequate when compared to the total electricity usage.

How much electricity can I export to the national grid if I install solar panels?

n accordance with the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation Number 26 of 2021 on Rooftop Solar Power Plants Connected to Power Grid of Business License Holder for Public Power Supply, solar energy system customers can export 100% of the total electricity surplus.

Who will provide the net metering if I choose to install an On Grid solar energy system?

The national grid will provide net metering, to replace your previous electricity meter, if an On Grid solar energy system has been installed.

Why do I need to install solar panels?

Based on a study conducted by the Institute for Essential Services Reform, Indonesia will experience a significant increase in electricity costs due to the depletion of fossil energy reserves and it is estimated that by 2030, 60% of power plants powered by fossil energy will become much more expensive compared to power plants powered by renewable energy. Therefore, the shift of source of electricity from fossil energy to renewable energy early on will be a long-term investment especially for industrial and commercial players.

What are the differences between On-Grid, Off-Grid, and Hybrid solar energy systems?

On-Grid solar energy systems are connected with national grid electricity or Regional Electricity Network. This system does not depend entirely on solar panels so no investment in battery installation is required. It is the most widely used system by SUN Energy's industrial and commercial customers. If the electrical power generated by solar panels, then the excess electricity can be exported in full (100%) to national grid or the Regional Electricity Network.

Meanwhile, Off-Grid solar energy system is not connected at all to the national grid electricity or Regional Electricity Network. It is suitable for buildings or land that are not connected to national grid or the Regional Electricity Network. Off-Grid solar energy system uses batteries to store excess electrical power reserves to be utilized when there is insufficient sunlight.

Then, Hybrid solar energy systems combine solar energy sources with other energy sources other than the national grid electricity or Regional Electricity Network. These other energy sources can be diesel, gas, geothermal, and wind. Hybrid solar energy systems can also combine its energy supply system with solar batteries and generators from other energy sources.

What is an inverter and what does it do?

An inverter is one of the main components in a solar energy system that plays a role in converting DC electrical energy generated by solar energy system into AC to be used to power electronic goods.

In addition to provide power so that electronic goods can work, AC electricity generated by the inverter is also useful for exporting excess power generated by solar energy system to the national grid network or Regional Electricity Network to be reused as credit when the solar energy system stops working at night. This is what makes solar inverters and control systems in solar energy system.

What is AC and DC current?

AC electric current or alternating current, is electricity whose magnitude and direction of current are always changing and alternating. In Indonesia itself, AC is maintained and is under the auspices of the national grid. Meanwhile, DC electric current or direct current is a direct electric current, flowing from the negative pole (electrons) to the positive pole. DC can be stored in a battery, one example is the battery needed to turn on a wall clock.

On what types of roofs can solar panels be installed?

Solar panels can be installed on Klip Lock, Tile Roof, Metal Roof/Corrugated Steel Roof, or Compound Roof.

Is it true that using solar panels will benefit me?

There are many benefits that can be obtained through the use of solar panels, namely:

● Minimal Maintenance Costs Solar panel maintenance is not complicated and not excessive. The maintenance is very easy, you only need to clean the surface of the solar panel periodically to ensure there is no dust attached. In general, solar panels have a lifetime of up to 25-30 years.

● Electricity Bill Savings The most important benefit is the savings on electricity bills. Regardless of the type of solar energy system installed, you can immediately feel the savings on the cost of electricity bills from the first month of use.

● Suitable for Indonesia's Climate Indonesia is a tropical country with stable sunlight throughout the year. You can take advantage of this by using solar panels/solar energy systems optimally.

By using solar panels, you will indirectly contribute positively to the environment. It cannot be denied that the earth's temperature is rising and global warming is inevitable. Switching to using solar panels can be the right step to save the earth.

Moreover, Indonesia is still dependent on the national grid's electricity that comes from burning coal. The use of solar panels is the first step to releasing that dependence, so that the impact of climate change can be reduced.

Are solar panels resistant to wind and water storms?

SUN Energy always selects best-in-class solar energy system components to maintain high quality materials that can withstand almost all environmental conditions. The average solar panel can withstand up to 2,400 pascals or the equivalent of a 225 kph wind gust. High-quality solar panels are thoroughly designed for exterior use, allowing them to withstand wide temperature ranges, weather conditions, and outside factors.

High-quality solar panels are rigorously tested to remain strong against tree limbs, hailstorms, high-speed winds, and more. To prevent overheating or cracking in cold temperatures, solar panels are equipped with special controls that allow them to remain operational in extreme temperatures.
